Olive Garden’s Culinary Institute in Tuscany

Posted on July 31st, 2010 by admin

Perhaps you have noticed the ad spots for Olive Garden’s. The Olive Garden has launched a series of commercials featuring the Culinary Institute in Tuscany. Well the truth is that they do have a cooking school that the top one hundred Olive Garden chefs and managers of Olive Garden restaurants are chosen to visit for eleven weeks each and every winter. The school has been functional since 1999 and provides amazing Italian cooking lessons. You may wonder what goes on after these eleven weeks? Well it leads a double life as a bed and breakfast the rest of the year.
This now popular institute is located on the estate of Riserva di Fizzano. It boasts a guest house, comfortable pool, restaurant and onsite winery. Romana Neri herself, the Head Chef of Olive Garden, is the administrator for this school. The chef lives in Tuscany and manages the cooking school. This entire arrangementbrings up the question: how genuine is this American restaurant? While there is a school in Italy, can the chain authenticate their claim to offer real Italian food? Well this is the tie in. It seems that the entrees contrived at the Institute are discernible on Olive Gardens menus with a particular seal. Two items devised at the Institute you may be served at Olive Garden include Grilled Shrimp Caprese and the Smoked Mozarella Fonduta.
So Olive Garden can claim that they operate a cooking school, but what is also noteworthy is that these chefs and managers are not the only ones able to go to the cooking school. Members of the public can participate in a one-week course. Each year a sweepstakes is held that anyone are able to enter and if they win they can attend the school. The winner is permited to stay seven days in Tuscany learning to cook at the school. They study items like wine, cheese, oils, and how to best use them to complement your dinner.
The school is in operation only twelve weeks of the year and the rest of the year it becomes a bed and breakfast where anybody may stay. In the off season the restaurant is open to locals and traditional Tuscan foods are offered to its customers. There are also cooking courses offered in order to educate visitors on Tuscan cuisine.
